Punakaiki

This small town is part of the Papora National Park, just 56km south of Westport.

Punakaiki’s world famous Pancakes Rocks and blowholes, is a ‘must see’ tourist attraction when visiting the West Coast.

The Pancake Rocks, are limestone formations that began forming 30 million years ago, when lime-rich fragments of dead marine creatures were deposited on the seabed, then overlaid by weaker layers of soft mud and clay. The seabed was then raised above sea level by earthquakes, which then formed the magnificent rocks known today as the Pancake Rocks.

Cape Foulwind Seal Colony

Experience a close encounter with New Zealand fur seals in their natural habitat on the wild west coast.

This seal colony, is home to many seals due to its rocky shore line that affords them haul-out spots and rich food sources.

There is are short tracks to take you to a viewing platform that overlook the seal colony. Although this is a year-round colony, the best time to view is October to March when the Big Bull Seals return to mate and the pups are at their most playful.

 

 

Coaltown Museum

Situated in the heart of Westport, Coaltown is an industrial museum dedicated to telling the stories of the pioneers that battled the rugged environment in search of a better life.

There are displays on coal and gold mining, minerals, hospitals, maritime, aviation, transport and saw milling, for you to experience.

Major exhibits include a “Q Wagon” and 20 Tone Break Drum from the Denniston Incline and a 2 storey high triple expansion steam engine from the bucket dredge SS Mawhera.
