Things to do and see in Hokitika
The Hokitika Gorge
The Hokitika Gorge is about 25km from Hokitaka township and is famous for its beautiful turquoise water.
There is a 15 minute walk to the gorge, with beautiful limestone cliffs, accessed via swing-bridge over the Hokitika River.
Turn left when you get to the end of the swing-bridge and walk 100m through the bush. This track will lead you out to another lookout, upstream of the bridge giving you views of the gorge.
Hokitika Heritage Walk
Once you have disembarked the bus, at the nakedbus.com stop outside the i-site in Hokitaka, pop inside theĀ Information Centre and grab a Hokitika Heritage Walk Brochure.
This brochure will then give you all the information you will need about Hokitika gold-rush and river-port town historic heritage sites, building and statues, that you can visit at your own leisurely pace.
Hokitika Glowworm Dell
Located on state highway 6, on the outskirts of Hokitika a just walk from the town centre is the Glowworm Dell.

Here you will find a lovely fern gretto by day become a glow worm colony by night.
Entry is free and the dell itself is a 2 minute walk from the roadside entrance, where there an information board if you want to learn more about the insect and its lifecycle.
Wildfood Festival
A celebration of Hokitika’s unique lifestyle, food and hospitality. This popular event draws in 15,000 festival goers and is held on the 2nd Saturday of March each year.
This is a festival not to be missed as the Wildfoods Festival has been awarded the Most Unique Event in New Zealand and has twice been a winner in the New Zealand Tourism Awards.
