Things to do and see in Greymouth:

Shanty Town Heritage Park

Situated just 10km from Greymouth, the town was established in 1968 when a group of railway and  vintage car enthusiasts decided they wanted to preserve West Coast relics and create a tourist attraction.

The park is now set on 500 acres of native rainforest and is surrounded by different buildings to experience the cultural and heritage attraction inspired by the gold rushes.

There is a wide range of activities to do and see, and this is why it is recommended that you put a good length of time aside to explore the town. There is 30 shops and buildings to explore,  you’ll find fascinating stories of life in the early years of colonisation both on the West Coast and New Zealand. This is an activity for the whole family as there are steam train rides and gold panning, which are popular activities amongst the kids.

Blackball

Blackball is situated 25km inland from Greymouth and is famous in New Zealand for its rustic charm and militant union past from its ‘glory days’ as a coal mining   settlement.

Now the town, it is well known for its rainforest and heritage walks.

Jade Country Greymouth

The West Coast of the Southern Alps is the source of New Zealand’s Nephrite Jade. This has been used for centuries by the native Maori for ornamental carvings, jewellery, weapons and tools. Jade country
Greymouth has original jade jewellery for purchase, along with a walk-through Jade trail display. The Jade Boulder Cafe, is also worth a visit as it serves organic coffee, whitebait and other ‘wild foods’.
