Things to do and see in Franz Josef:
Franz Josef Glacier
From its origins high in the Southern Alps, the Franz Josef Glacier descends deep into the lush rainforest of Westland’s National Park.
The 12km long Franz Josef Glacier is one of New Zealand’s most spectacular natural attractions, a remnant from the Ice Age which is one of the South Westland’s major attractions for tourists.
A great way to see the glacier is to join a guided tour; experts can showcase this spectacular and unforgettable terrain, creating a glacier experience to suit all levels of fitness and ability.
Lake Mapourika
The lake was formed when a large block of ice was left behind by the retreating Franz Josef Glacier some fourteen thousand years ago.
Just 8km north of the Franz Josef Glacier Village is Jetty Bay, which is a great place to enjoy a packed lunch, at the southern end of Lake Mapourika.
Be sure to bring your camera, the lake is known for its beautiful water reflections. On a fine day you can see views of Mount Cook, Mount Tasman and 14 Glaciers, including Franz Josef Glacier.
West Coast Wildlife Centre
The West Coast Wildlife Centre is centrally located in Franz Josef Village.
This attraction is located only a short distance from the nakedbus.com Franz Josef stop on Main St.
Here you can meet the Rawi Kiwi, one of the world’s most endangered birds.
