Fox Glacier
The Fox Glacier offers people a more remote experience as it is the less crowded glacier.
Fox Glacier is approx 3 km longer than Franz Josef and a major difference is the way in which the ice is accessed.
As in Fox Glacier access is along the river valley floor and then through a secret track into a rainforest up the side of the glacier.
Fox Glacier Guiding offers a range of difference guided tours to choose from to see the glacier, as the glacier itself is approximately 5km from the township.
Lake Matheson
Lake Matheson is one of New Zealands most scenic icons and just 6km west of the Fox Glacier township.
There is a walking track that winds through ancient native rainforest and has three different viewing platforms along the journey.
The full circuit of the lake takes between 1-1.5 hours, however there are shorter options to choose from.
Matheson Café is a breakfast, lunch or dinner experience not to miss when visiting the Lake.

Gillespies Beach
Gold was discovered at Gillespie’s Beach in 1865, and was the start of the mining madness.
Gillespies Beach is located 21km West from Fox Glacier township. There is now a number of short walks that will take you to mining relics and a miner’s cemetery at Gillespie’s Beach.
Make sure you allow yourself time to visit the miners tunnel, this walk will take you about an hour and a hour return. The tunnel itself is roughly thirty meters long and was blasted through the sea cliffs to allow for all-weather access to the gold operations.
